Leaving Verbier, riders descend into the historic village of Verbier, then follow the Route du Soleil before climbing to nearly 2,000 m at Les Shlérondes. Then the ride becomes a real pleasure, because from Chaux to Croix-de-Coeur, the level and aptly named Route de la Planie ("plateau road") provides a view over the resort. The descent to Verbier on mountain roads is exhilarating.

Variations:

  • from Chaux, climb to Mont-Fort cabin and Col des Gentianes pass;
  • from Les Ruinettes, descend to Le Hattey, Clambin and Verbier;
  • from Croix-de-Coeur, descend to La Tzoumaz
Vallée de Bagnes

From Verbier, riders descend to Sarreyer by way of the Route du Soleil, then go on to Lourtier. The long climb to Fionnay , alternating with deceptive, seemingly flat stretches, begins here and leads to Mauvoisin and the dam. Riders who still have enough energy can continue along the lake's left shore, where the open road alternates with tunnels hollowed out of the cliff. The ever-changing landscape seen along this route inculdes the magnificent scenery around the lake, the glaciers, and the numerous marmots. Ambitious athletes can set themselves the goal of reaching Chanrion cabin, perched at an elevation of 2,462 m. The return trip follows the same route in reverse, although some might prefer to take the Châble cable car back up to Verbier.

It gives the rider a chance to soak in the magnificent contrasts of the scenery--alpine meadows, larch forests and scree, with a view of the glaciers and the Combins and Mont-Blanc massifs. Two variations are suggested:
