Meet in Verbier for a taxi ride to the little village of Champsec. Here, in a building constructed by Pierre-François Gard in 1875, you will find the Maison de la Pierre Ollaire soapstone museum. The building formerly housed family apartments as well as a workshop where soapstone stoves were made for nearly 100 years.

The museum retraces the geological origins of soapstone, whose fascinating properties have been exploited since Roman times for a variety of purposes, including the construction of “Bagnard” stoves. These rectangular or cylindrical stoves are still renowned today for their exceptional ability to store and redistribute heat for hours on end. Soapstone is an easy rock to cut and has been used throughout the ages and on different continents to create a variety of objects, some of which can be viewed in the museum’s collection. When you leave the building, be sure to turn around and take a look at the exterior walls and window frames, which are also made of soapstone.

Next stop: Bocheresse quarry, where the soapstone was extracted. A walk of just under two hours will take you from the hamlet of Bonatchiesse to the entrance of the quarry. From there, you’ll embark on an extraordinary journey to the heart of the mountain, where the soapstone lies hidden. The quarry was first exploited in 1830, but was struck by a landslide at the turn of the 20th century. After a gallery was excavated, work resumed until the end of the Second World War, when the arrival of electricity sounded the death knell for this once-lucrative quarry.

The site has now been secured and made accessible, allowing visitors to Bocheresse quarry to gain a better understanding of the work that went into creating the exceptional soapstone stoves.
