    Between the Grand Combin massif and the Dent d'Hérens, both of which rise to more than 4,000 metres, immense dams have been built by man to tame the melting water of the great alpine glaciers. Mounting on the Swiss Valais and the Italian Upper Valpelline, in a region where lakes abound, superb, the Tour des Grands Barrages is an itinerary of altitude, culminating at 3,087 metres, not very difficult physically and representing only one or two steep passages and a glacier crossing, at the Col de Collon. This route links four major dams: Mauvoisin, Place Moulin dam, Grande Dixence and Cleuson.
