The Commune of
Val de Bagnes
 Sustainability in motion

An area worth preserving

Val de Bagnes stretches across 302 km² of raw alpine terrain, home to just over 10,000 year-round residents and 26 villages scattered between valley floor, alpine pastures and high peaks. Here, nature is never just a backdrop. It shapes daily life. Half of the commune lies within the Haut Val de Bagnes, a protected landscape listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes, Sites and Natural Monuments (IFP) since 1968.

Bisses (irrigations channels) tracing the mountainside, high-altitude lakes, mountain passes, glaciers and historic huts, every element tells the story of a territory shaped by ingenuity and adaptation. From this heritage grew a world-class ski area and a thriving tourism economy, both deeply connected to the rhythm of the seasons.

Public commitments
Real action

In Val de Bagnes, sustainability is a matter of balance, protecting a powerful Alpine heritage, supporting a resilient local economy, and preserving everyday quality of life.

Here, the challenges are real: energy transition, natural risks, water management, biodiversity, tourism pressure, climate adaptation. The Commune is moving forward with a clear approach — measure, prioritise, act, and make those choices visible.

The 2025-2028 legislative programme, sets the direction, with a clear target: carbon neutrality by 2050.
Backed by the Energy Master Plan, the GOLD Energy City label, and the development of a Climate Plan, these commitments are shaping a transition designed for the mountains, precise, grounded, and in tune with the region.

Val de Bagnes, also recognised through initiatives such as Commune en santé, turns sustainability into visible, on-the-ground action. A dedicated sustainability officer drives the approach, rolling out simple, effective measures you can actually see and experience:

  • An energithèque , a local platform helping residents and businesses better understand and optimise their energy use
  • Reusable tableware at events
  • Biodiversity awareness, from information campaigns to tackling invasive species and protecting heritage trees
  • Incentive grants supporting more sustainable choices
  • Each autumn, the commune hosts its Sustainability Weeks,“Les changements en marche”. Since 2024, these events bring together local initiatives, municipal services and partners through a series of encounters designed for the Bagnard community. Verbier Tourism takes part alongside the Triage Forestier and local Rangers.
  • The “Villages 2040” initiative goes even further, encouraging residents to shape concrete actions within their own villages, strengthening both quality of life and social cohesion.
