Abbey of Maurice Chappaz

Historic site and monument, Historic patrimony, House in Le Châble
  • Home of writer and poet Maurice Chappaz

  • Built in 1646, the Abbey initially served as the residence of the abbots of Saint-Maurice. With its geographical location and imposing architecture, the dwelling was a symbol of the church’s sovereignty in Bagnes valley. It was then acquired by the secretary of State Maurice Troillet, who was the maternal uncle of famous writer Maurice Chappaz. The poet and novelist, who died in 2009, lived at the house and mentioned it several times in his works.
