Description

Situated in the heart of the Swiss Alps, the Verbier 3-D Foundation is a non-profit cultural organisation dedicated to exploring the relationship between contemporary art, the environment and education through its internationally recognised Artist Residency and open-air Sculpture Park.
Founded in 2011 by artists Madeleine Paternot and Kiki Thompson, the Foundation has established a unique research-led residency and sculpture park at an altitude of 2,300 metres in Verbier, Switzerland. Recognised by Art Basel as one of the top five artist residencies in Switzerland, the programme brings together artists, scientists, environmental specialists and local communities to create new ways of understanding our changing alpine landscape. Since its inception, the Foundation has welcomed more than 50 Swiss and international artists, architects, designers, musicians and researchers. Each residency encourages participants to step beyond traditional studio practice through interdisciplinary collaboration with glaciologists, geologists, engineers, ecologists, historians, mountain guides, local experts and the wider public. Every residency is centred around a contemporary theme that reflects the challenges and opportunities facing mountain environments. Recent programmes have explored subjects including climate change, biodiversity, migration, water, geology and the future of Alpine ecosystems. Artists have investigated disappearing glaciers, mountain acoustics, historic bunkers, renewable energy, alpine biodiversity and the cultural significance of water, resulting in ambitious new works created specifically for the landscape. These site-responsive installations form the Verbier 3-D Sculpture Park, a free open-air museum that stretches across the spectacular alpine terrain between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux. Open throughout the year, the park features a constantly evolving collection of sculptures, sound installations, photography, architecture and environmental artworks that invite visitors to experience the mountains through new perspectives. Along the trail, visitors of all ages can discover the research behind each artwork and engage with the intersection of art, science and environmental stewardship. Through guided walks, educational programmes, artist talks, family activities and international collaborations, Verbier 3-D encourages meaningful dialogue about the future of mountain landscapes. Committed to sustainable tourism, the Foundation promotes slow travel by encouraging visitors to explore the park on foot, by ski or via the mountain lift network. Working closely with local partners, educational institutions and environmental organisations, Verbier 3-D contributes to the cultural vitality of the region while fostering greater awareness of the environmental challenges facing the Alps. Today, the Foundation continues to position Verbier as an international destination where contemporary art, nature and scientific research come together, offering visitors a unique cultural experience in one of Switzerland's most remarkable mountain landscapes.
