Description

Its name comes from a group of Belgian scouts who, during a summer camp in 1995, built a wooden table, benches and a footbridge as a thank-you gift to the local community for its hospitality. Replaced in 2021, the facilities continue to commemorate this unique story of friendship and exchange.
Located in the beautiful natural surroundings of Chassoure above La Tzoumaz, The Belgian Table is a popular picnic spot for hikers and nature lovers. Its story began in the summer of 1995, when around twenty Belgian scouts from Rixensart spent their summer camp on the alpine pastures overlooking the Fare Valley. To thank the local community for its warm welcome, the scouts decided to create a useful facility for residents and visitors alike. Using timber provided by the intercommunal sawmill of Leytron, they built a large wooden table, benches and a small footbridge across the nearby stream. Constructed in the true scouting spirit, these facilities remained in place for more than 25 years before being replaced by the Municipality of Riddes in 2021. Today, the site is still affectionately known as“The Belgian Table”, a lasting reminder of the friendship and goodwill that developed between La Tzoumaz and its Belgian visitors.
