Our story

A mountain inn, a crackling fire. A chairlift creaking into motion for the very first time. Since 1890, the destination has grown without ever running out of breath. From a quiet alpine pasture to a village that vibrates across the world, this is the story of Verbier and the Val de Bagnes we still carry today.

1890 – Fionnay establishes itself as a leading summer tourism spot in Valais, with the opening of the Hôtel-Pension de la Rosablanche and the Hôtel-Pension de Fionnen
1925 – Construction of the Cabane Mont Fort : Verbier’s first real tourism signal
1927 – The first guesthouses open (Mont Fort, Rosablanche)
1933 – The Verbier Swiss Ski School is founded
1935 – The road links le Châble to Verbier
1937 – Verbier’s development society is born
1950 – First Médran–Ruinettes chairlift : skiing sets things in motion
1953 – The train reaches le Châble
1958 – Completion of the Mauvoisin dam, the largest arch dam in Europe
1968 – 600,000 overnight stays : the village moves into a new era
1983 – A cable car reaches the Mont Fort
1994 – The Verbier Festival is created
1996 – First edition of the Xtreme Verbier
2004 – Launch of Bagnes Capitale de la Raclette, a festive week-end blending raclette tastings and désalpe celebrations
2009 – A Tour de France stage arrives, won by Alberto Contador
2013 – Verbier and Bruson are linked with the opening of the le Châble – Bruson gondola
2020 – The Tourist Office and Verbier Promotion merge to form Verbier Tourisme
