Description
La Scie et Moulins is a unique trilogy in Valais. A vertically mounted waterwheel forms the basis of an ingenious system powered by water and gravity. A single bucket wheel drives the saw, two flour mills and an apple crusher.
The mills of the Val de Bagnes were traditionally powered by horizontal waterwheels. In 1837, the inhabitants of Sarreyer came up with an innovative solution. A single vertical waterwheel powered both a sawmill and a flour mill through ingenious yet simple mechanisms. This allowed the user to saw timber, grind flour or crush apples.
Disused following the arrival of electricity and the widespread abandonment of cereal farming, the building has now been fully restored and is regularly put into operation. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1987. Thanks to ingenious yet simple mechanisms demonstrated by the caretakers, visitors can saw long logs of wood on the upper floor, grind grain or even crush apples on the ground floor.
