The building that houses the Maison de la Pierre ollaire in Champsec was built in 1875 by Pierre-François Gard. From the 17th century until the mid-20th century, the main form of heating in the Alpine Valais was the soapstone stove. The Gard family home housed a large workshop for the manufacture of soapstone stoves. Active for less than a century, the workshop was converted into a museum in 2004.
Round, square or on frames, the Bocheresse soapstone stoves, produced in the Val de Bagnes, are known as ‘Bagnards’. Named after the local inhabitants, they are renowned for their exceptional ability to store and release heat. Discover in a fun way the geological origins of soapstone, its uses since Roman times, as well as creations of various origins and shapes.
