Pierre Avoi

This rocky peak, easily identifiable from the Rhone valley, is one of the most iconic symbols of central Valais.

Despite its name meaning pointed –  from the patois “avouè” – it’s more angular, an almost rectangular shape set against an azure background reaching a height of 2,473 metres. Peaks like this never fail to impress. The majestic Pierre Avoi appears to keep watch over the area. A fantastic viewpoint, it overlooks Verbier, the Val de Bagnes, La Tzoumaz and the Rhône Valley and commands a breathtaking view of Mont-Blanc and the Grand Combin. If you feel like a walk, the Pierre Avoi is easily accessible on foot, with or without the use of the ski lifts to Savoleyre from Verbier or La Tzoumaz. When you get there, you’ll discover increasingly steep pastures and larch forests. The last few metres are climbed using a ladder that’s screwed into the rock. And while it’s a big goal for hikers, the Pierre Avoi is also a source of happiness for many a rock climber.

I love this little peak, which is easily accessible in trainers. One of my favourite training runs from Le Châble when I want to warm my calves up, because it’s a very steep ascent. Fortunately, there’s the reward of this incredible view over the whole Rhône plain, so magical at dawn.

For me, the Pierre Avoi is one of Verbier’s most unmissable places in summer. Climbing routes for all levels with an alpine feel. On a unique rock of its kind. It’s also the starting point of lots of incredible mountain bike descents down to Martigny, Saxon and Vollèges.
